2 June 2009 – I finally decided that my trusty Canon 20D, which has been my sole Digital SLR camera for the last 5 years, to upgrade it. I was torn between the Canon 50D and the slighter older 40D. Side by side, the two cameras are very much a like. One significant difference between the 50D and 40D is the pixel size of the photograph taken. The 50D offers a new sensor that can deliver a 15.1 mega pixel photograph versus the 40D that has an older sensor that can generate a 10.1 mega pixel photograph.

There are very few other features that distinguish the 40D over the 50D and after reading user feed back at several sites, I could not see why I should spend $1,200 for the body of a 50D when I could secure the camera body of the 40D for $870.00 new.
Buying a new 40D will be more challenging as Canon phases the camera out of the regular retail markets. I was lucky to buy mine through B&H Photo in NYC before they sold the last of their remaining 40D inventory. But if you are looking to save some money and don’t require a 15.1 mega pixel photo, the 40D could be a great way to go.
I utilized Digital Photography Review’s review of each camera. I have found DPR’s camera review to be indepth and full of detail. Below are links to each camera body’s review by DPR.
