Photography along the Jersey Shore

November, 2009 (Along the New Jersey Shore) - This year, I decided to head up to Spring Lake, NJ and explore the Jersey Shore for my Fall vacation.  My vacation was cut short by one day due to a Nor ‘Easter that was developing off the coast of North Carolina.  But, before the weather rolled in, I was able to get two good days to explore the Jersey coast north of Spring Lake, NJ.

Armed with my digital SLR, I set out to capture the off or quiet season along the shore. I did take the opportunity to take some photographs on my drive up, starting from the Cape May – Lewes Ferry as the weather was amazing and the sea, unusually calm.

I spent most of my first full day in New Jersey up at Fort Hancock, which up until 1974, was a US Army post.  The post has a unique history in the defense of NYC during WWII and during the Cold War.

During WWII, it housed coastal defense artillery that was to protect the NY Harbor from any would be attackers.  Then during the Cold War, the base operated as a Nike Missile site as part of a ring of missile sites established to protect NYC.  It was a small army post, but with some amazing beaches.  Today, the National Park Service managers the fort and most of the land around it.  The beaches are open to the public.
