SlideShowPro Makes GPS Enhancement to SlideShowPro Director

10 May 2010 (Silver Spring, MD) – SlideShowPro has made a very interesting enhancement to their content manager Director adding the ability for the CMS to read embedded EXIF GPS parsing on photographs uploaded into the CMS.

What is EXIF GPS? Some cameras save GPS coordinates in their EXIF data that pin-point the exact spot a photo was captured. Director now automatically detects GPS data in uploaded photos (both new and ones already in your library) and at the touch-of-a button displays the photo’s origin in an inline map (from Google Maps). GPS data is part of Director’s public API too, so we hope and expect to see some interesting creations from third party developers. Click on the link below to see how Director utilizes the information from EXIF GPS:

I did some research to see what if any of the current Digital SLRs in production utilized GPS in any way. As of 10 May 2010, I was unable to find any. However, there were several pocket/compact digital camera which do have the ability to store GPS information. I can see this being a great feature down the road and hope that the next generation of Digital SLRs start to incorporate the technology. Having such capability would allow one to enhance future blog entries and aid a photographer to recall exactly where one took a photograph.

In the mean time, if you want to add EXIF GPS data to your image, you will need to secure software that will enable you to edit the EXIF data and manually add the GPS coordinates.
